REFORMATION OF THE AREA OF KAMARES, KAVALA
2ND HONOUR, Architecture & Urban Design Competition, 2008
The region to the east of Kamares serves as a gateway between the city of Kavala and its surroundings, while Kamares itself stands as a remarkable archaeological monument—the aqueduct of the ancient city. Currently, the area is disjointed and primarily functions as a thoroughfare for traffic. The proposed plan strives to unify these disparate elements, creating an expansive public space that fosters interaction and serves as a gathering point for the citizens of Kavala. Central to the design is the concept of “meeting,” which plays a pivotal role in any public space, offering a fresh perspective on how to inhabit and experience the shared environment. The design places emphasis on two distinct types of meeting spaces: the “holes” and the “flowing strips.” These elements connect individuals both through seating and resting areas, as well as while they move and pass through the space.
